REAL ID Kicks-In in One Week. Don’t Have Yours Yet? Don’t Panic.

There’s one week to go before new Federal REAL ID requirements kick-in.  Beginning May 7, anyone over 18 years old will be required to present a REAL ID to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities or military bases. Lines are currently very long at Secretary of State DMV facilities across the state; but if you haven’t obtained your REAL ID yet don’t panic.

You DO NOT NEED a REAL ID to:

  • Drive
  • Vote
  • Identify yourself for general identification purposes
  • Enter a state building or federal building that does not require an ID to enter.
  • Receive state or federal services

You NEED a REAL ID or valid U.S. Passport to:

  • Board a commercial aircraft as a mode of domestic transportation
  • Visit military bases or secure federal facilities.

You can find out everything you need to know at the Secretary of State’s website, including information about REAL ID Saturdays, documents you need to bring with you to obtain a REAL ID, and what alternative forms of ID can be substituted: REAL ID
