WOODSTOCK, Ill. – The McHenry County Treasurer’s and the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office has learned of a property tax scam letter being sent out to McHenry County taxpayers. A sample of the letter is included below. The tax scam letter appears to come from McHenry County Government, but in the very bottom in small print there is a disclosure statement from a “Tax Registry LLC”. Letter encourages unsuspecting taxpayers to contact them to make payment for taxes, fees, and penalties. The amount that is stated to be owed is completely fabricated and not to be believed.
The McHenry County Treasurer’s Office is the only authorized entity for real estate tax collection. In addition, there is no known address for this company and the phone numbers shown on the letter are not local 815 area code phone numbers. Do not be fooled by this mailing, and do not contact this company regarding paying your real estate taxes or addressing any outstanding financial issues.
If you have any questions regarding this, call our office at (815) 334-4260. We can answer your questions regarding McHenry estate taxes owed, how to pay them, or if you have received the scam letter described above.
If you believe that you or a family or friend have been a victim of this scam, we encourage you to call the Treasurer’s Office at 815-334-4260 or the States Attorney’s Office at (815) 334-4159. The Treasurer’s Office and the SAO will continue to work together to keep the public informed and as safe as possible regarding this situation.
